How your teeth are built

Knowing the layers of a tooth makes dental problems easier to understand.

  • Enamel is the hard outer shell. It's tough but can still be damaged by acid from food and bacteria.
  • Dentin sits under enamel and has tiny channels to the nerve. When it's exposed, teeth feel sensitive.
  • The pulp holds nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay or injury here often needs a root canal.
  • Gums wrap around and support each tooth. They should look pink and firm, not red, swollen, or bleeding.
